Alex, this conflict didn't start when Georgia attacked South-Ossetian capital. It started a few days earlier in fightings between Russian supported Ossetian separatists and the Georgian troops. (Or in fact there has been sporadic fighting for several years). The peace keeping forces in S-O do have an UN mandate - they were established after the 1991-1992 war as part of the peace treaty. Since then, and before, Russia has supported and armed the Ossetian separatists.

Heh! According to Russia news and newspaper articles, there were Finnish women they called "valkyrians" fighing on the Chechen side against the Russians! Which was as muuch fairy tale as it sounds. But still they published that in all seriousness. The Russian media is as reliable on the war front issues, as is the Pentagon media. And similarly, only approved journalists are allowed to report there.
