Organ Player Automaton by Pierre Jaquet-Droz
BackThis is a late 18th century automaton that plays all by herself a specially built organ, quite impressive :-). Was built by Pierre Jaquet-Droz. Jaquet-Droz has the automaton breath to let the spring wind down. An ingenious way to preserve its resistance, otherwise the spring would loose strength over time.

Back in the late 1980s there was a device in development which allowed carefully positioned electrodes to be placed on the forearms of a human. From the electrodes, tiny electrical currents stimulated contractions in the muscles causing the fingers to twitch, allowing the wearer to play almost any piece written for a keyboard instrument, in much the same way this automaton plays. I wonder what happened to that thing...
