I absolutely love this song. Just makes me happy and melancholy at the same time. Is it just me, or does he remind everyone of the lead singer of The Killers? just a tad?

Yeah, definitely a sitar ( i see phondoug had already identified it ). If u like the sound put Norwegian Wood in the search; the sitar is the central instrument in that particular song.

The instrument you are referring to is probably a 'sitar' - an Indian instrument popularised in the 1960s by George Harrison of the Beatles; one of the songs he used it in was Norwegian Wood (among others ).
