Such a bittersweet song. Someone encounters a Mendigotte, feverish and undernourished, but the song mentions lovers too. Can that be the streetgirl and the man she just met, or is Montmartre a small universe where you can find beggars and lovers? I find it a beautiful song, but it also makes me sad. Anyway, life is hard, but human warmth can be found in cold places...

Such a beautiful song! You can hear it very briefly in Baz Luhrmann's 2001 movie "Moulin Rouge!" sung by Rufus Rainwright. They play it when Ewan McGregor steps off the train near the beginning of the film. It's also on the soundtrack CD, as well, in its entirety.

j'aime cette grande chanson de film...... que j'aime contrôle de version de wainwrights de rufus un meilleur... il dehors
