Grim Reaper [1987]
BackA television advertisement screened in Australia around 1987 to alert people to the dangers of AIDS. This advert has generated considerable controversy since, as the "grim reapers" in the ads - which were meant to symbolise HIV, were taken to symbolise gay men.

Such a spooky ad, it was made the year I was born but I remember seeing this ad when I was a kid.
What I dont understand is why people think this ad is homophobic? I was under the impression it did the opposite, stating that death doesnt discriminate and AIDS was an illness everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, needed to be aware of.

i know u posted this a while ago about the aids ad but there is a new show comming to history channel i belive about aids in australia this ad was realeased because Sydney was going thru a AIDS crisis and it needed to be stoped hence the reason for this ad targetting aussies and not the world

Me too, I was only 7 and it scared the crap out of me, but it stuck with me all these years so I guess it did the job.

I was only 7 when they first aired this commercial and it scared the hell out of me and i never forgot it! Over 20 years later i still remember it! It sends a very powerful and scary message
