people often use the argument that because Picasso could really paint well but then decided to take his art in a different direction with cubism that his later works are great works of art. this is rather like saying that a great athlete who decides to sit around on his arse, smoking cigarettes and eating pork pies is still a great athlete. I personally get nothing out of looking at Picasso's later work and I'm not that impressed by his earlier work either.

Picasso is a virtuoso, but he is so passive. Some of the Dadaists despised this work because it reveals genius in a passive context of virtuoso skills.
