Thanks for your reply to my post. We all like to have a witness once in a while. Denanna Durbin will never know the impact she has made on so many lives. As I have stated before; I think she made a very wise choice to let us remember her as she was. Old age and ill health can be so cruel. Look at recent Eddie Adams and her demise; I was shocked!

This aria is from Verdi's "La Traviata"and Deanna's character is Violetta, the lover of pleasure who is already dying and wants to pack as much partying into a life which she knows will be a short one. Trouble is, she falls in love with Alfredo, His dad . Germont, doesn't approve and a lot happens before she dies on stage at the end with both men present.Deanna would have made a great Violetta on the opera stage. A few years older than she is when she sings this aria. Bravura, diva Deanna!

I agree with the comparison of Deanna, the Canadian Songbird, with Te Kanawa,New Zealand's gift to music, and Fleming. What about a young Dawn Upshaw, who was on the stage at the Met in 1984 (age 24) and whose voice on Goreki's "Sorrowful Symphony" in her early 30's took Europe by storm. We have Deanna's movies, but Oh! she could have done much more had she continued her career instead of walking away from it at age 26 or so. But she did it her way and that's fine. operabuff1935

Deanna's sitaution was a little different from Shirley's at 20th and Fred and Ginger's at RKO. While those studios had other popular stars under long-term contract to help bring in profits, throughout her adolescence, Deanna Durbin was Universal's only "A list" star under long-term contract. According to published reports, Deanna's films were responsible for more than 17 percent of Universal's profits during the late 1930s. She really deserves the accolade of saving her studio singlehandedly.
