The M-16a1 was first issued in numbers in '64. Stan isn't really specific about what weapon he means; it's rather irrelevent, but the date in the song('65) would mean he was probably toting the A1. Yeah they were jam masters, all right. M-14 was still in wide use too, but your average grunt would have been stuck with the A1.

also when he says his weapon jamed he is so talking about the m16 because the m16 always jamed. its cause no cleaning kits were given to the soldiers and it cause it to jam like my dad told me that even a little grain of sand can jam the gun it sucked cause one of my dads buddys got killed cause his m16 jamed
