Toyota vs...Toyota? Camry Hybrid takes on the Prius
BackLEARN MORE ABOUT TOYOTA HYBRIDS: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Comparos/articleId=127826 Guy walks into a Toyota dealer — sounds like a joke so far, right? Not quite. Guy walks into a Toyota dealer looking for a 2008 Toyota Prius. He's heard about hybrids for awhile now, and the Prius is one he knows by name. He vaguely recalls some celebrity bragging about taking one to the Academy Awards instead of a limo, and then there was that South Park episode, "Smug Alert" a couple of years back. And didn't Al Gore's own son make headlines for getting busted doing 100 mph in his Prius? Something like that. Beyond the hype, Guy's never really given hybrid cars much thought, much less gone looking for one. And even though he can afford a decent-size car or SUV, the price of gasoline has him looking for fuel economy in a serious way. And there on the showroom floor, Guy sees a 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid for almost the same amount of money as a Prius. Now what?

No matter HOW HARD people try to BASH the PRIUS!! U still at some Point in TIME have to REMEMBER that the CAMRY HYBRID ALSO HAS A BATTERY PACK Plus the ALTIMA HYBRID!!
NOW THE BATTERY PACK ON THE ALTIMA AND HYBRID CAMRY ARE JUST AS EXPENSIVE AS THE PRIUS' BATTERY PACK!
*Choke on That*

It's currently $4000 to replace the battery pack.

In the UK, diesel is about the same price as gasoline, and they already have a bunch of diesel cars that get the same or better mileage than a Prius. In his own words (while driving a Prius): "If you wanted an efficient car, why not go buy a Golf diesel?"

I think the problem with diesels, especially in urbanized Europe, is that they don't get as good fuel economy as hybrids do in stop-and-go traffic. They get better mileage on the highway, though.

Yeah, but the diesels are usually cheaper. In the UK, a base-model VW Golf 1.9 TDI costs UKP 14,990 vs. the Prius at UKP 18,255. The Prius does get better combined mileage (54 mpg US vs. 47 mpg; in the UK test) but at an extra 3,000 pounds, you can buy a lot of fuel. But Jeremy Clarkson is a little biased against the Toyota.

I disagree. If you want all out gas mileage and don't care about comfort or style the Geo Metro fits the bill. Excellent gas mileage but not really easy on the eyes. Don't get me wrong, the Prius is a good car. It's just pricey. Really though, a hybrid Camry and a Prius is an unfair comparision. The Prius is an economy car, the Camry, is well, a Camry with better gas mileage. The Hybrid Camry is also an excellent car.

My mom has a 2002 Toyota Camry and they had to fix something on the car so they gave her the 2009 Camry Hybrid. When I got into the car it was very weird, it was also extremely quiet too. Anyway I got in and to those folks who don't know they don't have a key, just put your foot on the brakes, hit the start button and put it in gear. It's an interesting car, doesn't accelerate like her 02 Camry but all in all I like it. I wouldn't buy it for myself but my fiance would love it!
