Meet Emily - Image Metrics Tech Demo (HQ)

Back

Yes you read correctly, TECH demo. She's fake. She IS the demo. Until the 1:30 mark when they revert back to the source (the real actress), her entire face is being simulated by the technology. Peace out uncanny valley! ps. Thanks to perrygood&true for the HD source material for this upload. ps2. Fyi, Times Online broke the coverage on this particular before any other site. Give them some clicks. If you only film an actor all you can do is compose that shot in other shots, this is a very limited effect. If you have a 3D representation of an actor's performance you can do anything with it, you can turn it into an animation that runs in the rendered environment. In a video game context this is the difference between a video cut-scene (state of the art in the Sega CD days) and an interactive in-game-engine experience.

hey dummy, she said it herself the purpose of the technology is to make realistic videogames. of course this is a video interview their is no REAL purpose, just to show their graphics. but the ultimate goal of Image Metrics is video game reality.

I do find it impressive. Of course it isn't perfect, but pretty close. I may be naive for asking, but what is the point? If you have to have an actor pose and act to make it work, why not just film the actor? Makeup & special effects go a long way these days. If the end result isn't supposed to be human, why bother filming human expressions?

The first time I saw it, I completely fell for it, what beautiful/scary technology. If I had to say if ANYTHING were off, it would be the eyes, not that they don't look real, but the blinking isn't quite fast enough. Then again, eyes are the hardest thing to get correct. And like I said, first time through, I totally bought it, and part of me still wants to buy that it's an actress and not CG. Awesome stuff!

It appears they are simply at a level where the fake computer image is physically correct.. and thus the visual cortex is not sufficient on its own to establish if the image is from a camera or a CG. I presume the voice is done by a real girl which helps fool the brain... like "the voice is real so the image is probably real too" And the fact that her face follows the speech. Adapt and prepare yourselves for the day such tech falls into evil hands. :-D
