okay, okay everyone, calm down. you can all stop being pissed off and threatening others with your comments. there's nothing wrong with abstinence, just like there's nothing wrong with safely engaging in sex. this woman did an awkward job of explaining that the government is trying to promote a certain religious viewpoint all across the country while denying correct sex ed to teens. that's all..

Her "sideways jabs" at abstinent people were mostly geared towards the people promoting abstinence-only education in place of proper sex-ed. Consider, also, that proper sex-ed would also cover abstinence.
That show isn't designed to persecute those who choose to abstain, it's designed to: "Midwest Teen Sex Show is here to provide sex information in a clear and entertaining way."
Taken from their own website.
It is extremely cynical about abstinence, but not designed to persecute them.
randommagnum (Thursday 2nd of October 2008 04:51:46 PM)
Nah, I'm not buying that.
Believe me, I would really like for what you are suggesting to be true, that her criticisms are only about educational prescription and not anyone's prudent lifestyle, but her implicit arguments and demonstrations tell a different story.
Same with the Midwest Teen Sex Show... Even if there's no outright criticism of abstinence or those who practice it, it's that cynicism itself which hosts an atmosphere of persecution.
I'm just calling it like I see it.

That is a bad analogy my friend, it has been proved again and again by the CDC is that abstinence is 100% safe from diseases and unwanted pregnancies but with contraceptives and being responsible about it only reduces the risks. To avoid to get hit by a car is to look out for cars and look both ways before crossing.
jgoemat (Tuesday 30th of September 2008 04:45:57 PM)
Not riding in a car is a 100% effective way to not get killed in a car crash. Wearing your seatbelt could save 50% of the lives of people that are killed in car crashes if they would have been wearing them. Would you JUST teach people about the safety of traveling on foot, or would you teach them about seat belts in case they ever did end up in a car? Abstinence-ONLY education is a waste of money and is ineffective.

Yes, the hypothesis of abstinence is 100% safe, but has no real efficacy since it is battling against our much stronger and evolved instincts to mate, where it looses every time. The solution to this problem is to optimize: simultaneously maximize potential coitus and minimize spread of disease. All other doctrine is irrelevant next to this directive.
