I am learning this aria at the moment and really appreciate hearing a good performance by a bass baritone, my range. Has anyone come accross a performance by a bass baritone of the recitativo that precedes the aria? The only uploaded performance I have found is by Jose Carreras, a tenor.

I'm a baritone and sang this very song. Whenever I watch this vid, I cry because his voice is so...so delectable.

It's in the key of E flat... making the high note an E flat

Tenors use the head register more frequently than basses. The ability to blend registers is a matter of training. The middle is actually a mixture of chest and head registers, and is the most difficult to get right.

Plus, he's a high baritone and the low B-flat in this key is problematic. It would make even less sense for him to sing it in D with a low A.

Yep, you're right, my mistake. It is E flat. My computer is playing it in D? o.O; lol
