The intro is a standard bass line riff established by Luther Perkins as a member of the Johnny Cash Tennessee Two. It has been copied by many.

Witty lyrics.

Actually, Luther only played the same 3 chords over and over. I think more of Jerry Reed and Mr.Chester Atkins when I hear this.

Perhaps you don't realize the impact Luther Perkins had. As an original member of Johnny Cash's "Tennessee Two", Luther's plunking intros, bass lines [and breaks] on the lower strings helped establish the Johnny Cash "sound". BTW: Early Country/Western music was based on the three chord progression. It was pure and clean in those days.

lol, i love it as well. it's said in a funny way but at the same time it's like "yeah if you think i'm good you haven't heard nothing yet, come to Nashville"

Back in the ancient days when this song came out on the radio, the DJ's would talk about how this song was NOT a tribute to Nashville because of the last line of the song, "And I sure am glad I had the chance to say a word about the music and the mothers in Nashville" was said to not be about the musician's mama's. The whole song does seem to be tongue-in-cheek.
IMHO, I do think they were praising Sun Records though. Love the song. Love the Lovin' Spoonful! Listen to Do You Believe in Magic!

Nice song, but Sun Records was from Memphis.
