Google Tech Talks June 20, 2007 ABSTRACT The FreeBSD Project is one of the oldest and most successful open source operating system projects, seeing wide deployment across the IT industry. From the root name servers, to top tier ISPs, to core router operating systems, to firewalls, to embedded appliances, you can't use a networked computer for ten minutes without using FreeBSD dozens of times. Part of FreeBSD's reputation for quality and reliability comes from the nature of its development organization--driven by a hundreds of highly skilled volunteers, from high school students to university professors. And unlike most open source projects, the FreeBSD Project has developers who have been working...

freebsd is only for super users aka admin. normal users are not gonna use it in their production house, never. so that means freebsd popularity is and will still far below linux. don't even compare it with osx and windows. anyway, i agree that freebsd is the best os ... for server!
SJOERDONLINE (Sunday 1st of June 2008 11:23:37 PM)
i use linux on desktop as well :)

All I can say to that is this: Simply not true. FreeBSD isn't just designed for server use only. Normal users can and do use freeBSD on laptops and desktops widely. Popularity for FreeBSD, yes will remain low compared to Linux, windows, or osx. What's the best OS for a server? Depends on what you want to do with the server. Don't run Ubuntu (Worst Linux distro ever) on a server. Don't put Window's Server 2003 on an every day user computer.
