This song is about his love for racing pigeons. When Billy Joe was 14 he had a pigeon called Basket Case, unfortunately the bird was eaten by a cat. If you look at 2:13 you will see a subliminal picture of a pigeon. Sad, but happy too.

omg no this song is about how his kid wouldnt fall asleep. he wrote it in his kids room while he was trying to get him to fall asleep. go on to greendayauthority and look up the song meaning.
