APS charter school audit had over 300 infractions
BackWhen the state auditor looked through APS charter schools financial statements, he found 361 occurrences of financial mismanagement across the district including one principal giving himself a little extra spending money, and book keeping problems in multiple charter schools records. In one case, the audit shows the Academy for Talent and Development Secondary charter school is paying for staff cell phones and even an independent contractors cell phone. In another, construction costs were billed, where no construction has been done. The audit found the executive directors daughter is a contractor to the school. Meanwhile, the business managers mother can sign checks because she founded the school. A principal at another charter school was giving himself $215 per diem, $100 more than is allowed under state law while other charter schools were found shorting employees on their paychecks. One of the most common problems throughout the district was only one person was handling and depositing the money and the same person was also in charge of entering the amounts into the books. Hector Balderas, the state auditor who performed the audit, said he was disappointed to hear the schools officials describe that as a minor finding. That deficiency is the same deficiency that occurred in the Jemez mountain school embezzlement case which was the largest embezzlement case in school history, said Balderas.
