She's an idiot. What dog doesn't like a hot day?

You're the idiot. Climatic preferences are very much breed and even individually dependent. Her dog has a rather thick coat, so it does feel the heat more than say, your average mixed breed tropical dog, which are mostly left free to breed by themselves. This means that the tropical breeds you see are the products of natural selection based evolution alone. And yes, they thrive in the tropical heat.

While the local movement of stars within their own galaxy is mostly irrelevant to conditions on earth, their position in the sky can tell us something about where *we* are in space...namely, where we are with respect to our star, and thus, what kind of weather we might expect. So although the Romans may have gotten the causation wrong, their observation of the correlation may not be so far off the mark.
